Outline two explanations of resistance to social influence. [4 marks]
Answer: One explanation of resistance to social influence is social support. When individuals observe others resisting the pressure to conform or obey, it gives them confidence to act independently. The presence of a supportive ally breaks the sense of unanimity within the group, making resistance more likely.
A second explanation is locus of control. People with an internal locus of control believe they are responsible for their own behaviour and outcomes, meaning they feel less pressure to follow others. They believe they have control over their own circumstances and are therefore less likely to conform or obey.
