Explain what is meant by locus of control. [4 marks]

Answer: Locus of control refers to how much control an individual believes they have over their own behaviour and life events. It is measured on a continuum ranging from internal to external. People with an internal locus of control believe that their actions and decisions directly influence what happens to them, so they take personal responsibility for their behaviour. In contrast, people with an external locus of control believe their behaviour is shaped by external forces such as luck, fate, or other people. Locus of control therefore reflects a person's perception of control, rather than the control itself.

Examiner Comment: Locus of control is about a person's perception of control, not the actual control they have. Students should refer to it as what individuals believe about the causes of their behaviour.
